The 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or 2019 award has been announced, and leading the way is a rather surprise selection.
According to the Ballon d’Or 2019 betting odds, Barcelona superstar Leo Messi is the red-hot favourite for glory at a price of 1.1.
Cristiano Ronaldo and his seven-year monopoly on this trophy alongside Messi ended by Luka Modric last year, but today they are acting as a leading cast of the very best players from around Europe.
All in all, there are seven Liverpool players on the shortlist, with the winner announced at the gala in Paris on December 3. The next best represented club is Manchester City with five, while Barcelona have four players on the list including, of course, Messi.
But the judging panel felt as though Neymar hadn’t done enough to be nominated, while Paul Pogba and Harry Kane were also surprise omissions.
So who represents the best value in the Ballon d’Or betting? Let’s take a look at the odds.
1. Ballon d’Or 2019 Odds
As already mentioned, it’s Leo Messi who leads the way in the Ballon d’Or odds at that red hot odds-on price.
Next in the Ballon d’Or 2019 odds is Virgil van Dijk, who can be backed at 7.00, while after a succesful season by his standards – relatively speaking – Ronaldo is way back on 21.00.
Others of note include the Liverpool trio of flying winger Mo Salah at 51.00, Brazilian shot stopper Alisson at 51.00 and Senegalese ace Sadio Mane at 67.00.
After a fine year in the Premier League and on international duty with England, Raheem Sterling is rewarded with a place on the shortlist at odds of 67.00, while other stars such as Eden Hazard (67.00), Kylian Mbappe (81.00) and Antoine Griezmann (101.00) will also attract interest.
2. Ballon d’Or 2019 Predictions
To win the Ballon d’Or 2019, Van Dijk would be making a slice of history: he would be the first defender since Fabio Cannavaro to win the award in 2006, and only the second in more than 20 years to be recognised as the best player in Europe.
Those are extraordinary odds to overcome, and you can forgive others for dismissing the Dutchman in their Ballon d’Or 2019 predictions.
However, his odds reflect the feeling from the bookmakers that he already would have his name on the trophy if not for Messi, even after Liverpool’s Champions League victory last season it would be a surprise if one of their players did take this trophy home.
Van Dijk has established himself not only as the best defender on the planet, but also one of the most valuable players full stop – regardless of position. For that reason, the centre back has to top our Ballon d’Or betting tips next to Messi.
The past year has not been a particularly rewarding one for Cristiano Ronaldo by his own mesmeric standards.
Both endured below-par efforts in the World Cup, while neither particularly shone at club level given that – despite domestic success – both Barcelona and Juventus failed to make the grade in the Champions League, which is a key cornerstone of this prize.
It should be said that both enjoyed personal success, with Messi scoring 48 goals in another glittering campaign for Barca in 2018/19. But injuries have cost the Argentine game time this term, and he can be discounted for that reason.
Similarly, Ronaldo hasn’t taken Juventus to the heights expected of them, despite further success in Serie A. CR7 ‘only’ managed to score 29 goals last season, and while he considers to be a major force in Italian football he hasn’t had the kind of powerful influence over the continental game as normal.
For that reason, one of the legendary pair is removed from our Ballon d’Or 2019 bet shortlist.
So can anyone compete with Messi or Van Dijk for honours? It’s very difficult to promote the cause of any players from champions like PSG and Bayern Munich, who enjoy domestic dominance but continue to struggle making inroads into the business end of the Champions League.
Given their brilliance to win the Premier League title, Manchester City deserve a mention, and central to their glory was the duo of Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling.
The former enjoys the respect of his peers but perhaps hasn’t done enough to be taken seriously in this category, but Sterling could emerge as a surprise contender. He scored 22 goals and provided 12 assists for his title-winning side, and has become a fantastic anti-racism ambassador off the pitch too.
