Attention starts turning to the third major tournament of the tennis schedule: Wimbledon 2019. The grass court at SW19 have been spruced up and kept in perfect condition for the July extravaganza, while a new roof has been installed on court number one to ensure that more action can take place even when the British weather turns to rain, as it usually does!
Both of the respective defending champions, Novak Djokovic and Angelique Kerber, are well fancied by the bookmakers to go back-to-back, but of course they will have plenty of high-class opposition looking to ensure that doesn’t happen.
So how do the sportsbooks see the competition going? Let’s take a look at the Wimbledon betting odds.
1. Wimbledon Betting Odds 2019
As far as the Wimbledon men’s winner betting odds are concerned, it is Djokovic who dominates the market. And why not? The Serbian has won each of his last three majors, and as long as his body remains in good condition the odds of 2.62 on him lifting a fifth Wimbledon title look fair. His major competition, according to the bookies, will likely come from Roger Federer (5.00) and Rafa Nadal (9.00), although there are doubts about both. Federer is not getting any younger, and while we still expect him to perform miracles out on the court it must be getting harder and harder for the Swiss ace to compete. As for Nadal, he’s not reached a Wimbledon final since 2011 and not lifted the trophy since 2010. Those odds look far too short.
With Andy Murray unlikely to play in the men’s singles, the next few in the Wimbledon betting are Alexander Zverev (15.00), Milos Raonic (18.00) and Marin Cilic (20.00).
As far as the Wimbledon ladies betting odds are concerned, Serena Williams will start as the 5.50 favourite. She will be looking to win her first major since 2017. Elsewhere, Petra Kvitova (7.00) has done amazingly well to recover from life-threatening injuries to contend again, while Naomi Osaka (10.00) must be respected given that she has won the last two women’s majors. Kerber (12.00) will surely attract plenty of interest from the betting floor, while the ever-dangerous Karolina Pliskova (15.00) will, at some point in her career, finally fulfil her undoubted potential as a Grand Slam event winner.
2. Wimbledon 2019 Predictions: Men’s Singles
If you were to make the most obvious of Wimbledon 2019 predictions, you would say that Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer should go very deep into the tournament.Djokovic is benefitting from a lighter schedule on the ATP Tour these days, which is helping him to recover better from injuries and fatigue. But the Serb is still popping up with tournament wins, and he has looked particularly sharp during this clay court campaign – that has never been his favourite surface. Federer, meanwhile, won the Miami Masters in March and reached the final of the Indian Wells Masters, and in committing to the clay court season he is showing that even at his grand old age his body is feeling good. When in confident mood, the Swiss star is arguably the man to beat on grass. And so the pick of our Wimbledon predictions is Federer to lift the trophy at odds of 5.00.
Big servers like Marin Cilic, Kevin Anderson and John Isner are a bit one-dimensional, and if the courts play at a slower pace than normal then they can be swerved in the betting, as can Alexander Zverev, who is yet to really show his best at elite level despite boasting obvious class.
For punter happy to think outside the box, Stefanos Tsitsipas (25.00) looks a real prospect and a possible Grand Slam winner in the making. The Greek reached the fourth round of SW19 last year, where he was unable to break down Isner’s serve, but he’s another year older now and is maturing into a fine player.
For a real curveball, Denis Shapovalov (66.00) is a former junior Wimbledon champion who has started to reach the latter stages of tournaments. A left-hander, the Israeli-Canadian could be a force to be reckoned with on the grass.
3. Wimbledon 2019 Betting Picks: Women’s Singles
At such short odds, it’s hard to really take Serena Williams seriously in our Wimbledon 2019 betting tips. She can win this title, we know that, given that she’s one of the best grass court players of all time. But that air of invincibility which she had prior to her pregnancy has gone, and other names are starting to assert their dominance on the women’s game.
Angelique Kerber has the perfect defensive game for the grass, and the German is not far from the shortlist. But we’re expecting Karolina Pliskova to achieve big things in 2019, and a title at Wimbledon seems a possibility. You’ll want to be backing somebody else too, in case Pliskova has her usual meltdown in majors, and so Elina Svitolina (29.00) is of interest. The Ukrainian had an excellent hard court season, and she’s a player that has beaten all of the best women on the planet. Expect her to have a say in the majors this season, and perhaps Wimbledon is the most likely destination for her to succeed.
