Following the disappointment of their performance in the local derby against bitter rivals Manchester United, Liverpool bounced back with a flourish with a 4-1 hammering of Genk in their Champions League Group E clash.
Their sluggish play at Old Trafford was a thing of the past, as a energetic and vibrant midfield of Fabinho, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain got an early stranglehold on the game.
In the end, it was the latter who took the plaudits with a brace of goals – one of which was a stunning finish with the outside of his boot, but overall it was a fantastic display from the whole trio.
In attack, Mo Salah was restored to the Liverpool side after missing out with injury lately, and the Egyptian’s ability to produce moments of magic also helped to add a much-needed edge to the Reds’ attack. He played in Sadio Mane with a delightful pass for their third goal, before adding the fourth himself to cap a fine night for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
As for Genk, it wasn’t the first time that they have been completely outplayed this term having been trounced 2-6 by Salzburg in this competition, and once again they appeared not to be cut out for this level.
They enjoyed just 26% possession of the ball on home soil, and their consolation goal came in the 88th minute when Liverpool had well and truly taken their foot off the gas.
|Team ||Record ||Goals ||Points |
|1. Napoli ||2-1-0 ||5-2 ||7 |
|2. Liverpool ||2-0-1 ||8-6 ||6 |
|3. Salzburg ||1-0-2 ||11-9 ||3 |
|4. Genk ||0-1-2 ||3-10 ||1 |
The status of Group E is straightforward enough, with the English side and Napoli now enjoying a comfortable cushion to the rest.
And it would be difficult to imagine them getting caught from here, with the Belgians surely needing to win at Anfield in the return game on Tuesday November 5.
Is that likely? Perhaps not, but it is at least theoretically possible as we will explore in this Liverpool vs Genk preview.
1. Liverpool vs Genk Betting Odds
Given the clear disparity between the two teams in the first game, it doesn’t take a genius to work out that Liverpool will be a red-hot favourite in this one.
And that has proven to be the case, with the Reds a 1.08 shot in the bookies’ Liverpool vs Genk betting odds.
Those who enjoy backing outsiders can get 36.00 about a shock Genk victory, while the draw is priced at 12.00.
2. Liverpool vs Genk Predictions
Given what we saw in the first game in Belgium, how can we go for anything other than a home win in our Liverpool vs Genk predictions?
The visitors here have shown nothing of note in this Champions League campaign to suggest they can hang with the big boys – albeit the 0-0 draw with Napoli is of interest.
But look at what has happened in matches against genuinely attacking teams in Liverpool and Salzburg: they have conceded ten goals in just 180 minutes of play!
We can also reference their position in the Belgian Pro League; a competition which, as we know, is a few rungs below the Champions League in terms of quality. There, Genk find themselves in sixth place with a record of W5 D2 L4. It’s not exactly frightening for their opponents, is it?
3. Liverpool vs Genk Betting Tips
This is a really difficult match to get any value from in our Liverpool vs Genk betting tips, and we don’t really have too many angles to play.
We expect Liverpool to win and to win well, and really that is the only idea we can run with.
You can back Liverpool with a -2 goal handicap at 1.66, and while those odds are too short for us there may be some punters who feel that is value given the likelihood of the Reds winning by three clear goals or more here.
Klopp will presumably field his more attacking midfield players such as Oxlade-Chamberlain and Keita, and that certainly lends itself to goals.
You can get 1.75 about a Liverpool win and Over 3.5 Goals, and that certainly appears to be good value to us.
And if you want an odds-against chance, how about this: at half time, we want Liverpool to be winning and Over 1.5 Goals to have been scored: that’s available at 2.10.
