Just when you think you have witnessed the greatest Champions League comeback of all time, another contender comes along just 24 hours later! If you’d asked Liverpool and Tottenham fans if they thought they would reach the final having been three-nil down to Barcelona and Ajax respectively in their semi-finals, the answer would have been short and potentially foul-mouthed. But both teams showed fantastic character to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, and now Liverpool and Tottenham take their place in the Champions League final betting odds – the first time in more than a decade that two English teams have contested for the right to lift the European Cup.
Let’s take a look at how they have got to the final, which will be played at Atletico Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on Saturday June 1.
1. Road to Champions League Final - Liverpool
Neither of these teams have enjoyed an easy route to the final, and indeed there has been more than one occasion in which they looked like they might be heading for the exit.
Liverpool started life in Group C with a big win over perennial contenders PSG, but away defeats at Napoli and Red Star Belgrade left them in a dogfight with the Parisians and the Italian side for a place in the knockout stage of the competition. That left them in a straight shootout with Napoli at Anfield in the final match of Group C, and Mo Salah’s goal was just about enough to see the Reds into the last 16 despite the Italians missing some good chances which would have seen them progress instead. Happily for them, the first two rounds of the knockout phase were surprisingly easy: Bayern Munich didn’t put up much of a fight in a 3-1 aggregate win for Liverpool, while they completely outclassed Porto in the quarter finals to record a 6-1 triumph.
Up next were Barcelona in the last four... and this is where things got interesting. The Catalan outfit romped into a 3-0 lead at the Nou Camp, with Lionel Messi at his jaw-dropping best in a match in which the English team were completely outplayed. They now stood no chance of reaching the final, right? Well, maybe not, especially when the talismanic Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino were ruled out of the second leg through injury. Ironically, it was a man who has been in that pair’s shadow for so long – Divock Origi – who came to the party. He opened the scoring in the seventh minute to give Liverpool hope, and the Belgian would latterly score the winner on a pulsating night at Anfield. In between, a brace from Gigi Wijnaldum had got the Reds on level terms, and it was a night in which former Liverpool aces Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho – and of course Messi himself – were almost anonymous.
Liverpool had achieved the near impossible, and they will now take their place in a second successive Champions League final.
2. Road to Champions League Final - Tottenham
Forget the heroics of the semi-final for a moment, because Tottenham’s perilous journey in the Champions League of 2018/19 started as early as September last year! Remember, they took just one point from their opening three games in Group B, and at that point they looked destined to be knocked out of the competition at the earliest possible stage. But Mauricio Pochettino’s men rallied. They beat PSV and Inter Milan on home soil, before heading to Camp Nou and securing their own slice of history against Barcelona in a 1-1 draw. It was enough to take them into the last 16.
There was no let-up for the English team here either. A comfortable win over Borussia Dortmund led to a quarter-final clash with Manchester City. Spurs won 1-0 on home soil in the first leg, before an almighty collision – arguably the best game of the Champions League this season – took place in the second leg. After eleven minutes the game had already seen four goals (2-2), but goals from Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero gave City a 4-2 lead on the night and a one-goal cushion on aggregate. But this Tottenham side has got tremendous fighting spirit, and Fernando Llorente would later score the goal that would seal their passage to the last four on away goals.
Against Ajax, they were down and out once more, but Lucas Moura’s hat-trick in Amsterdam completed yet another amazing comeback for Spurs. They simply never, ever give up!
3. Tottenham vs Liverpool Betting Odds
The great thing about there being two English teams in the final is that we can compare their performances in the Premier League, which makes our Champions League final 2019 predictions that bit easier. We note that Liverpool will finish around 24 points clear of Tottenham in the table, and that in their two games this season Liverpool twice beat Spurs 2-1. There have been nine meetings between the two teams since Jurgen Klopp took over at the Reds – Pochettino was already at Tottenham – and we note that Liverpool have won four of those, with four draws and only one defeat. It seems as if Klopp has the edge tactically on his opposite number.
When we consider that the Reds have Champions League final experience, we have to make our headline pick of our Tottenham vs Liverpool betting tips to be Liverpool to win at odds of 2.00.
Interestingly, of those nine head-to-head games, seven have witnessed both teams scoring, and so the last of our Champions League final betting tips sees us recommend both teams to score at odds of 1.70.
