It’s crunch time in Group H of the Champions League 2019/20 with Valencia, Chelsea and Ajax all level-pegging on seven points with two rounds of matches.
That lends itself to a thrilling conclusion, and while the players might not agree given how much pressure will be on them, from the perspective of the neutral the next set of fixtures – which will take place on November 27 – should be fantastic to watch.
In some ways, Valencia are a favourite to progress ahead of Chelsea, simply because they have home advantage here.
However, the Blues will host basement side Lille on the last gameday, whereas the Spaniard will have to travel to Amsterdam in what will be a must-not-lose contest. It’s a fascinating set-up.
It was actually gameweek four that changed the nature of Group H completely. Valencia ran out comfortable 4-1 winners over Lille, giving them a much-needed three points, while Chelsea and Ajax played out an incredibly entertaining 4-4 draw.
Ajax would have been left kicking themselves. They led 1-0 after just two minutes, before romping into a 4-1 lead with an hour played.
But Chelsea’s young and fearless team did not give up, and a trio of late goals secured the point which kept their knockout stage hopes alive and prevented Ajax from running up a handy cushion.
|Team ||Record ||Goals ||Points |
|1. Ajax ||2-1-1 ||10-5 ||7 |
|2. Chelsea ||2-1-1 ||7-6 ||7 |
|3. Valencia ||2-1-1 ||6-5 ||7 |
|4. Lille ||0-1-3 ||3-10 ||1 |
All of which means that Wednesday’s game in Valencia becomes even more important!
With all of the permutations in mind, here’s our Valencia vs Chelsea preview as we attempt to get to the bottom of things.
1. Valencia vs Chelsea Betting Odds
The bookmakers are expecting a close game here, and that’s because they are as much in the dark about this topsy-turvy group as we are!
In their Valencia vs Chelsea betting odds, they make the visitors the favourites at odds of 2.30.
The hosts, on the other hand, can be backed at odds of 3.00, while the draw is available at 3.50.
2. Valencia vs Chelsea Preview
For a group of four teams that have all played attacking, enterprising football up until now, the first game between these sides was a surprisingly lacklustre affair.
In a game of few chances, it was Valencia who eventually got over the line with a narrow 1-0 victory.
It’s quite possible that this game might take on a similar pattern given how much is at stake, although if one of the teams can conjure an early goal then that will open up the encounter completely.
Chelsea also beat Ajax 1-0, but generally the theme for them this season has been goals at both ends of the pitch. In addition to the 4-4 nail-biter with Ajax there was a 2-1 victory at Lille, and in the Premier League their 12 games so far have witnessed a very handsome 44 goals – 27 for and 17 against.
Valencia are rather more circumspect, and they haven’t scored many goals in the La Liga without conceding too many either. In the Champions League, their first three scorelines were 1-0, 0-3 and 1-1, and even in their 4-1 triumph over Lille three of their goals came after the 80th minute mark.
This is a very difficult game to call between two teams with very different outlooks on the beautiful game, who just so happen to be in decent enough form to avoid defeat here and keep their hopes of reaching the last 16 of the Champions League alive.
Making Valencia vs Chelsea predictions is tricky then, although suffice to say we are expecting a tense and cagey game given that both teams have so much to gain and plenty to lose too.
3. Valencia vs Chelsea Betting Tips
If Valencia are to win this game, they will probably look to keep it as tight as possible before sneaking a winner in a hard-fought contest.
Chelsea, on the other hand, will play with their usual attacking gusto. That is Frank Lampard’s approach to the game, and a pleasing side-effect of having a youthful, fearless and occasionally naïve starting eleven.
But the carrot that looms large is so big and juicy that we’re anticipating neither team giving an inch, and so in our Valencia vs Chelsea betting tips we’re happy to take a slightly contrarian approach: Under 2.5 Goals is available at odds of 2.70.
Of course, we know our followers want us to make a prediction as to how the match result will finish, but as you can tell from the small spread in the bookies’ odds it’s simply too close to call!
